About

We believe that art should always be about a connection and not reduced to a transaction. The goal of this connection is to make original local art more accessible while also helping to kick-starting artists’ careers. It’s a symbiotic relationship where the buyer can gain get a much richer experience by meeting the artist face to face while the artist gains valuable insight into who their clients are and what they love.

STEP 1

Artist creates art and lists on the Calgary Art Market

First, Calgary Artists will need to APPLY to sell their art on the Calgary Art Market. Once they have been approved they can create a customized profile page and start listing their available work. They can even list their art as an auction if they want to move art quickly or get a feel for what their price point might be. It’s encouraged that artist’s promote their available work on their social media channels to encourage interest in their artwork.

STEP 2

Buyers browse artwork online and buy what they love

Buyers can browse all available art on the Calgary Art Market but must CREATE AN ACCOUNT in order to bid or buy art. Some items are available at a fixed or sale price, other items may be available as an auction. For auction items, buyers can place bids and automatically be notified when they are outbid. They also can place a hidden maximum bids. Once they purchase a piece online, they are directed to a secure online payment process where they can pay by any major credit card.

STEP 3

Buyer and Artist meet to exchange artwork

Once the order’s complete, the Artist will contact the buyer to arrange a meet-up as soon as possible, generally within 3-10 days. This can be at the Artist’s studio, school, place of work or public place – libraries are a favourite! If there’s one thing better than getting a cardboard box delivered to your address, it’s meeting the artist behind the art you purchased, shaking their hand and looking them in the eye. Art isn’t about a transaction, it’s about a connection.

FAQ

When a user creates a free account on the site, she/he can bid on art. There is a $5 minimum increment and Automatic Bidding and Anti-Sniping is in place for all auctions. The art is awarded to the highest bidder at the end of the auction and once the payment is complete they will be contacted to arrange a pick-up.

Automatic bidding is the easiest way to bid on an auction. When you’re ready to bid on an auction listing, enter the maximum amount you feel comfortable with. We’ll then bid on your behalf – enough to keep you in the lead, but only up to that limit.

If someone outbids you, you’ll get an email letting you know you’ve been outbid.

Tip: Bidding on items can be exciting, but it is a contractual obligation. When you’re deciding on your maximum bid, be sure you’re happy to pay that amount if you win the auction.

To avoid last minute bidding, any bids received within the last 5 minutes of the auction will add 2 minutes to the auction countdown clock.

For example, if an auction is ending at 6 p.m. and a bid comes in at 5:59 p.m., the auction will be extended to 6:02 p.m., another bid at 6:00 p.m. will extend time to 6:04 p.m., and so forth. By doing this, the art will go to the highest bidder and not just the ‘quickest clicker’ giving everyone a fair chance to place their bid.

If you get outbid immediately after placing a bid, it’s likely another bidder is using automatic bidding, and has a maximum limit that’s higher than yours. You’ll need to bid again in order to be the highest bidder.

If you enter a bid by mistake, just contact us and we’ll do our best to remove your bid as quick as possible!

If when you see the art in person it isn’t what you expected, then you have the option to refuse it. When this happens you will need to contact the Calgary Art Market to initiate a return. If you accept the art but after you bring it home you decide it’s not a good fit, then you can reach out to the artist directly to see if they would honour a return, though they are not obligated.

Some Artists may be willing to deliver the artwork for an additional fee. This varies by artist and is managed directly through them. Feel free to contact the artist before you purchase the art to see what delivery options, if any, are available.

Generally no, but some pieces may be available to ship (be sure to ask the Artist prior to committing to the purchase).
